The following is a letter my father wrote to his US Congressional Delegation (I've removed identifying information at his request). There is a real concern and need for as many people as possible to read this and contact your own representatives. Our Veterans need our help.
They kept us safe. Now it's our turn to help them.
Health Care for Veterans
I am retired from the United States Air Force. I served for twenty three and a half years. I retired from the Air Force with the expectation that my health care would be taken care of for the time I served to protect our country and the freedoms we enjoy in the United States. I served in Vietnam in 1970 and did the ground directed bombing of mostly the B52 bombers.
I recently turned 65 years old, and although I have not used any medical facilities since I came under Medicare and TRICARE For Life, I can see that Congress wants to take away my medical coverage and start charging me high out-of-pocket expenses. Over the past twenty two years I am lucky to have paid the $150.00 out of pocket expenses each year because I do not abuse this great benefit that is provided to the Military.
I would like you to vote against OMB's request for changes to the law that that will greatly increase out-of-pocket medical expense for the Active Duty, and Retired Military personnel. Option 96 is on page 175 of their congressional report.
I know everyone wanted to have "CHANGE" with the last election. I am sure we will get plenty of change in higher taxes, more cost to the military, and just worse choices from Congress. You could recover all the extra cost of this program against the military for the next ten years by getting all the BONUS'S that were paid out by Wall Street in your current Bailout program. That amounts to about 20 Billion of wasted tax payer money.
It is really sad to what has happened to our economy. It is all of Congress not just the past Presidents that has gotten us in the mess we are in today. I really lack any hope that the present Congress and the new President will be able to solve the problems. You are simply digging a bigger hole in which the future generation of Americans will never be able to get out of. I can see that I may have to go back to work just to be able to live. Several of my military friends that are in their 70's & 80's must work just to survive in the present economy.
I trust that you will vote against any measure that comes up that will be against the Military. The high cost of Medical Care should be controlled, but I do not think it should be at the expense the Retired Military that have served faithfully to protect the United States of America.
